Founder
Mary Ellen Mannix is the founder of PULSE of PA, Pennsylvania’s chapter of the nationally recognized grassroots patient safety organization, PULSE America.
She began her work in patient safety following the death of her newborn son, James, from a series of preventable medical errors and sentinel events. Her work with PULSE of PA includes support to survivors of medical errors, patient safety education to healthcare institutions and communities, and advocacy for the safest delivery of healthcare to save patients’ lives and providers’ livelihoods.
Following her son’s death, she organized and ran the James Mannix Memorial Birthday Party which raised funds for The Make A Wish Foundation of Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania.
She is a member of The Congenital Heart Information Network helping to create their first "memory book" which was displayed at the 2002 CHD Week festivities. She has assisted The CHD International Quilt Project as an Angel Liaison, Contributor, and Host for Quilt Displays. After refusing a near-seven figure settlement offer with confidentiality clause, Mary Ellen saw her son's wrongful death case to verdict and post-trial motions. She is passionate to see a PEACE in Healthcare initiative take root after personal discussions post-trial with one of the doctors involved in James' case. Mary Ellen is dedicated to renewing the trustful relationship between patients and their physicians. On this issue, she is a catalyst.
In 1998, Mary Ellen was the invited speaker of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and spoke on Life, Choices and Unplanned Pregnancy to an audience of 2000 including state and national dignitaries. Her advocacy work has brought her to serve on the Joint Commission’s International Center for Patient Safety Patient & Family Advisory Group. She has been consulted with The Pennsylvania’s Governor Office of Healthcare Reform regarding recent legislative changes in healthcare. She has been a featured guest on radio and television programs including the National Public Radio program, Voices In The Family with Dr. Dan Gottlieb, Real Life with Mary Amoroso's "Death of a Baby” and CN8’s Comcast Newsmakers. She has written on the topics of grief, infant loss, medical error, and restoring trustful relationships between physicians and patients. She received the Patient & Family Scholarship to the 2007& 2008 National Patient Safety Foundation's Annual Congresses and was also a participant of The Quality Colloquium at Harvard University in 2007 through scholarship.
Mary Ellen is a teacher of 21 years and has been a member of The National Association for the Education of Young Children, served on the board of the Delaware County Early Childhood Education Association, served on accreditation committees for The Pennsylvania Association of Private Independent Schools, and volunteered to raise funds and awareness for gifted education. Mannix developed a preschool program using the “Henry the Hand” curriculum which focuses on the importance of hand awareness to children as young as two and a half years old up to and including parents and grandparents.
