Some specifics about PULSE of PA presentations:
Health Care Safety: Educational Programs
Since the Institute of Medicine reported in 1999 that 44,000 to 98,000 people die in hospitals every year from preventable medical errors, healthcare providers are more acutely aware of the dangers from medical errors. Healthcare providers are often already in a position to work within their institutions to educate staff to take an active role in preventing medical errors.
The public is not aware of medical errors and what it means to be a “partner” in their healthcare. Until we are able to educate the public on how they can take an active role in their care, along with some of the responsibility, patients will not be able to help in making healthcare safer.
PULSE of PA is a resource for patients and families after a medical error, adverse event or unexpected outcome in healthcare. Members are encouraged to work with the healthcare system, using their experience to help implement change and educate the public.
